GST – Goods and Services Tax

GST was introduced to bring uniformity and transparency to the taxation system in India. It replaced several indirect taxes such as VAT, service tax, and excise duty.

Under the GST regime, tax is applied at each stage of the supply chain but is ultimately borne by the final consumer. Businesses can claim input tax credit, which helps reduce the cascading effect of taxes.

With the recent GST 2.0 updates, the tax structure has been simplified into key slabs such as:

0% – Essential goods and exempt supplies
5% – Basic consumption goods and services
18% – Standard rate applicable to most goods and services
40% – Luxury and sin goods

Some categories of goods and services remain exempt from GST.

Types of GST Active in India

There are four major types of GST currently applicable in India.

CGST – Central Goods and Services Tax
CGST is collected by the central government for intra-state transactions (when goods or services are supplied within the same state). CGST is usually charged along with SGST.

IGST – Integrated Goods and Services Tax
IGST is applied to inter-state supply of goods and services, as well as imports. The central government collects IGST and later distributes the revenue among the respective states.

SGST – State Goods and Services Tax
SGST is collected by the state government for intra-state supply of goods and services. CGST and SGST are generally applied at equal rates.

UTGST – Union Territory Goods and Services Tax
UTGST applies to supply of goods and services in Union Territories. It is charged along with CGST in territories that do not have a state legislature.

    GST Calculation and GST Accounting

A GST calculator is an online tool that helps you quickly calculate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on goods and services. By entering the quantity, rate per unit, GST rate, calculation type (inclusive or exclusive), and tax type, the calculator automatically determines the taxable amount, GST value, and the final invoice amount. The Free GST Calculator by RealBooks helps businesses, accountants, and professionals calculate GST instantly without manual calculations.

To calculate GST using an online GST calculator, simply enter the quantity of items, rate per unit, and select the applicable GST rate such as 0%, 5%, 18%, or 40%. Then choose whether the price is GST inclusive or GST exclusive and select the tax type (intra-state or inter-state). The calculator will automatically compute the GST amount, CGST/SGST or IGST breakup, and the final value within seconds.

In a GST inclusive calculation, the price entered already includes the GST amount. The GST calculator separates the tax from the total amount to show the original taxable value and GST portion.

In a GST exclusive calculation, the entered price does not include GST. The calculator automatically adds the GST amount to the base value and shows the final price payable after tax.

The Free GST Calculator supports commonly used GST slabs in India such as 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%. These GST rates apply to different categories of goods and services under the Indian GST framework. By selecting the correct GST slab, the calculator can accurately compute the tax amount and total invoice value.
